Mathematics

In Mathematics all our pupils follow a common course using textbooks specifically designed in our school for the National Curriculum but which are becoming widely used in other schools throughout the country. The emphasis throughout the school is on developing pupils’ confidence in their own ability and on convincing them that ‘MATHS IS FUN’. Pupils are normally set during their first term but still follow a broadly common course and set placements are reviewed regularly throughout Years 7, 8 and 9. We aim to provide stimulation for pupils with special ability and support for those with particular difficulties so that all pupils achieve their full potential in the subject. We are committed to seeking improvement and through our specialist school status we are benefiting from considerably enhanced facilities including interactive whiteboards in all our teaching rooms, subscription to Maths Alive to give us access to the type of resources that can further stimulate and motivate our pupils and our own computer suite.

At Key Stage 4 we offer both the traditional linear GCSE Maths course and our newly introduced modular scheme. Higher tier students predominantly follow the linear course and foundation tier students the modular course. The modular course gives students the opportunity to resit modules to improve their overall grade. Each year we encourage many of our pupils to take part in Mathematics competitions and challenges including the UK junior, Intermediate & Senior Maths Challenges. Last year over 250 of our pupils took part in these challenges, gaining a lot of satisfaction and enjoyment as well as high level of success from them.
