Modern Foreign Languages
All pupils are given the opportunity to study two foreign languages at KS3. In Year 7, pupils start by learning French and are taught in mixed ability tutor groups. In year 8 German is introduced and students are taught in ability sets, providing language learning opportunities for all. In Year 9, students may choose to continue with both languages or to just focus on one according to their preferences.
At KS4, pupils can now choose which languages they would like to continue studying and Spanish is now also made available. French, German and Spanish are all successfully taught up to A level.
Modern languages are delivered in accordance with the National Curriculum Programmes of Study covering 4 attainment targets: listening, speaking, reading and writing. We aim to promote confidence and competence in language learning and greater cultural awareness.
Pupils are encouraged to take part in our language exchanges to Germany and there are also educational visits which are both linguistic and cultural, to France and Spain. Pupils also have the opportunity to work with our foreign language assistants to improve their conversational skills and gain a greater understanding of the importance of communication.
