Science
All pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 follow a science course which gives equal time to the three disciplines, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. In Y7 pupils are taught in mixed ability groups which are in fact their tutor groups. Progress is carefully monitored and at the end of Year 7, the pupils are placed in sets according to ability.
The Science Faculty are continuing to develop and are implementing the KS3 Science Strategy to stimulate pupils and aid their learning. Challenging targets are also set for individuals to help them realise their full potential throughout the Key Stages.
Science GCSE’s are examined in Year 10 & 11 with most students completing one full GCSE (core) by the end of Year 10! These students then start their second Science GCSE (additional) in Year 11. They will then sit 6 modular tests in Year 10 worth 75% of the core GCSE. 25% of the course is a coursework component examined within school. In Year 11 students are examined in the Summer and again the courseworkelement is examined in school.
Our most able Scientists will be studying for three separate sciences throughout Year 10 and 11 and will be awarded Biology, Chemistry and Physics GCSE’s. These accelerated students will also sit examinations in Year 10 & 11with the coursework component being assessed within school.
