Tarporley High School
& Sixth Form College

Music is the social act of communication amongst people, a gesture of friendship, the strongest there is.

Malcolm Arnold

A music department where pupils are unafraid to take musical risks, and to delve into music. We aim to develop a life-long love of music for all whilst equipping students with practical and personal skills that will last a life time.

What you can expect studying Music at Tarporley High School and Sixth Form College

In Music, you will study a curriculum that is driven by practical skills and theoretical knowledge. We encourage pupils to take part in numerous music making activity, focussing on performing, composing and analysing.

Through musical study pupils will develop key skills such as teamwork, concentration, ICT skills, individual confidence and self-discipline; it is intellectually satisfying and stimulating study and therefore necessary for the complete education of our students.

Key Stage 4 – GCSE Curriculum

At GCSE, we follow the AQA GCSE Music courses. Students study a breadth of music, and over a two year course create compositions and performances that are submitted for examination.  Unit one focusses on listening and contextual understanding, unit two performance and unit three composition.

Students will engage in practical music and be free to choose what style of music they perform or compose in.

How we assess at KS4

Students take an exam in the final year of GCSE study, which equates to 40% of the GCSE, many practice listening exercises are completed and assessed at the end of each exercise. Composing and performing work takes place over the duration of the course and is assessed at progress points throughout the course.
