Tarporley High School
& Sixth Form College

Performing Arts at Tarporley

Here at Tarporley, we pride ourselves in creating many opportunities for students to extend their skills and follow their passion in these subjects.

Every Year we create successful  and professional School Productions, often featuring over 150 students, taking on the roles of Performers, Stage Managers or forming part of the Technical team.

In addition to the School production, we think it’s just as important to show case the outstanding work that develops in lessons; therefore, in the Summer concert, students in Key Stage 3 and 4 volunteer to perform condensed pieces of class work, originating from Units of Work studied in class. This creates a real sense of achievement amongst our students and often encourages those who are less likely to want to get involved with the School Productions or Drama and Dance clubs, to get involved.

As our subjects are very practical based, a lot of our time is spent devising Drama with exam classes and teaching them about new and exciting play texts and roles to research and explore, which introduces students to Drama through the ages. Often we invite different Year groups into spectate and feedback on these exam pieces, which helps to formulate the working diaries the exam students have to produce when evaluating the process of their practical work. KS3 really enjoy these opportunities and often develop the skills and techniques they’ve seen in this practical work, into their own work, showing how they’ve been inspired.

In addition to our clubs, exam performances, show casing of outstanding work and the whole School Production, students studying Drama and Dance have the opportunities to take part in Practitioner workshops, attend Theatre Trips, join our Digital Theatre Cinema club and attend Residential trips, that help them to experience all aspects of Drama, Dance and Theatre and not just the performance route.

We have liaised on many occasions with The Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester, attending technical and design work shops, where students have had the opportunity to interview and work alongside Lighting, Sound and Costume designers. When we led the trip to New York, students were inspired by spending the day at the Ripley Grier Studios, watching real life audition processes and talking to those conducting the auditions about the different pathways into the Arts.

As well as this, our Dance students have represented Tarporley High School at the Cheshire Dance Show at the Crewe Lyceum and many of our Dance students have gone on to study Dance in London, Birmingham, Leeds, LIPA and with other Cheshire Dance Companies.
