Year 10-11 Curriculum Information

Key Stage 4 Curriculum (Year 10-11)

It is our aim that every student starting Key Stage 4 sets out on a pathway that will take them forward in their learning, open up their chances and choices in life, and enable them to achieve valuable qualifications at the highest level of which they are capable. The number and the types of courses and qualifications followed by each student should be appropriate in terms of individual aptitude, level of challenge and overall workload, so that the goals for each individual are stretching but achievable.

Routes and Pathways

The Key Stage 4 structure enables students to follow a curriculum that recognises that students’ aspirations and needs are different and therefore need to follow different routes.  Each route does allow for students to make some individual option choices.

There are three routes:

  • The English Baccalaureate Route (Ebacc) - This route enables students to achieve the nationally recognised English Baccalaureate standard.  We recommend that the majority of our students select the Ebacc route to enable them to gain this recognition of achievement in key subjects.
  • The Non Ebacc Route - This route is for students who do not want to take all the optional components of the Ebacc (we require all students to take one of the Ebacc Subjects). Within this route there are a number of pathways to suit different skills and aspirations.  Students can select subjects where practical skills are assessed through coursework in areas such as the Arts, Physical Education, Information Technology, Enterprise and the Design & Technology subjects. Students may wish to use the opportunities with their three choices to follow pathways that specialise in areas such as the Arts (e.g. Art, Music and Drama).
  • The Foundation Learning Route - This route is for students who require a more personalised pathway. It allows structured time for students to do additional work to support the eight subjects they are studying. Student select three option subjects and most study ASDAN COPE as part of their 4th option.
