Apprenticeships and Careers

“Students in the Sixth Form, have the opportunity to engage with employers. Pupils spoke very positively about the high-quality careers guidance that they receive. They get the timely information that they need to make appropriate decisions about their next steps.”

OFSTED 2023

The majority of our students do go to University, but University is not for everyone and Tarporley Sixth Form offers support to those students who are ready to enter the world of employment after A Levels. Mr Brownley is a former Recruitment Consultant, we are very fortunate and well-placed to offer our students excellent career guidance in Sixth Form.

We also liaise very closely with Tarporley’s Careers Team who also have years of experience and contacts in the world of work.

The Careers Team

Mrs Rowlands - Careers Lead

Responsible for delivery of the school’s careers programme and holds an overview of careers provision for the Gatsby Benchmarks.

Mr Nuttall - Student Development SLT

Assistant Headteacher with responsibility for student development, including Careers provision.

Mr Brownley Careers provision lead in Sixth Form.

Runs assembly’s, communicates opportunities relevant to Post 18 careers and coordinates Year 12 work experience.

In addition, we encourage former students to share their experiences for others to learn from. Last year, former student, Joe, talked to Year 12s about his Police Apprenticeship via the University of Chester – he has recently become Chester University’s 500th Apprentice!

Careers Fair

In Year 13 we have a Careers Fair and fill our hall with employers and providers from the local area. Students visit the employers in a ‘speed-dating style’ and gain insights into different vocational fields. Students have the opportunity to ask questions / network and consider their future pathways.

The Careers Fair Options Card is attached as an example of the breadth and range of employers that are involved in this session.

Skills Show

Every year we visit the Skills Show at the NEC, Birmingham. WorldSkills UK LIVE is the largest experiential skills, careers and apprenticeship event, attracting over 70,000 participants. It sees businesses, educators and young people come together to experience excellence at work. Students are encouraged to mingle and chat to the many stallholders, so they leave with information and careers guidance.

Work Experience Week

In March of year 12 a week is set aside for an official work experience. We work with MPLOY SOLUTIONS, the company that the school also use for the Year 10 work experience placement. MPLOY assist students throughout the process and have a selection of employers for students to use if they do not manage to arrange a placement independently.

We encourage students to be pro-active and find a placement themselves, as this encourages them to contact employers in a professional manner and represent themselves appropriately.

We often see students fall in love with careers, focus their career path towards something they were inspired by in their week of work and we have had many students come back with job offers!

Guest Speakers, Visits, Workshops and our Alumni

We invite local Apprenticeship providers to speak to students interested in this route as much as we can. Companies who have visited us include: Bentley, Airbus, Toyota, Vauxhall, BBC, ITV, Rolls Royce, the Police and more.

We also ask former students to explain application procedures to Year 12 and 13, and share their experiences. Last year, we had students from Barclays, AC Jackson (a steel framed building company), Unilever and a Police Apprentice. We believe it is very beneficial for students to hear from their peers and pride ourselves on the links we forge with our alumni.

We also had two students, Becca and Caitlin, share their Gap Year experiences, with travel tips and information.

Mock Interviews

We invite employers to deliver workshops to students on Interview techniques and also offer mock interviews to prepare our young adults for that daunting and competitive experience.

Digital Footprint

We have delivered workshops on the critical importance of having a positive and PRIVATE digital footprint before entering the world of work. Employers have shared their procedures regarding social media searches with students – and also the consequences that follow when employees are indiscreet or inappropriate on their social media accounts. Important lessons for all!
