About TERM

We are proud of our Sixth Form magazine which has won awards at the National Shine Media Awards for the last 8 years. Term magazine has existed since 2015 when a Team of students decided they wanted a Sixth Form magazine to voice their views and opinions on topical issues. Since then, the magazine has gone from strength to strength and has evolved with each new Editorial Team. It is a student-led publication, overseen by Mrs McMillan, and we've had amazing Editors over the years, who have each put their own stamp on each issue. The articles in each magazine are a pleasure to read; the writing quality is superb; the coverage of topics is diverse and the digital photography and artwork are exceptional. Not only that, being involved with Term allows you to develop leadership qualities, communication skills, make new friends and simply have fun! We look forward to you getting involved!

Applying to be Editor of TERM, is by far the best decision I made in Year 12. We wrote articles and created a whole magazine on topics the team and I were passionate about, and I have made some of the best friends! Even if you’re not an English lover, or an arty person, still try and get involved because you may end up finding your passion. This time last year, I wanted to be a Midwife and now I’m hoping to study Journalism at University! Winning 5 Awards at the SHINE National Media Awards (for the fifth year running) was an amazing achievement. Get involved.

NATIONAL SHINE MEDIA AWARDS

The Shine Media Awards is a national competition that rewards a diversity of talent from secondary schools across the UK who work on the writing, editing, design and fund-raising for a school newspaper, magazine, podcast or website.

The awards ceremony is held at the prestigious Stationers’ Hall, in London by St Paul’s Cathedral and the judging panel are made up of specialists from the world of journalism: Simon Heffer (former Telegraph Editor and writer); broadsheet feature writers, such as Katie Glass from the Times; representatives from HEARST publishing (the company that produces magazines such as: Elle, Esquire, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Men’s Health and more). There are always guest speakers on the day and these have included professionals from Google, ITV and the esteemed writer and broadcaster, Bryony Gordon. It really is a fabulous day and over 200 schools from all over the country enter each year.

The fact that we have won Awards every year, proves the quality of the students’ work and collaboration. A ‘Highly Commended Award’ results in a masterclass and visit to London for the winners, learning more and actually experiencing the realities of the journalistic world. We are so proud that the quality of our writing has been commended year after year.

SHINE AWARDS 2022

TARPORLEY STUDENTS SHINE …. ONCE AGAIN

In the summer of 2022, we travelled to London for the SHINE MEDIA AWARDS in London. When we arrived, the organisers recognised Mrs McMillan and actually commented: “Shine Awards without Tarporley is absolutely unthinkable!” As we have won awards at this prestigious ceremony since 2015, it felt like a real privilege to be there and to represent our college and flagship publication once more.

We arrived not knowing what our awards were, but instead waited with baited breath to hear what our prized magazine had been commended for. First, we spoke to the Social Media Manager of ‘Conde Nast’ and the Editor of ‘Elle magazine’ during the pre-ceremony workshops. This furthered our understanding of the media’s significance  and its ability to communicate messages via digital, convergent platforms; being in London, in the centre of the publishing world, and speaking to journalists felt really exciting.

We were then inspired by a speech delivered by Sir Nicholas Coleridge, CBE, chairman of the Victoria and Albert Museum, chairman of the Gilbert Trust for the Arts and co-chair of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Pageant. He discussed student magazines with great pride and respect, believing that publications where young people’s voices are heard are still incredibly valuable, even in a digital age.

We finally heard our awards and proudly went to collect them from Alison Strachan and Robert Flather, Chair and Master of the Stationers’ Company. Our awards were:

  • WIN: Best Design
  • HIGHLY COMMENDED: Best Magazine and Best Business and Marketing Strategy.

Clutching our awards and certificates, we then left the ceremony and tweeted our victories! We then walked along the Southbank and also visited the Victoria and Albert Museum, where there was a ‘Refashioning Masculinity’ Exhibition, with clothing and design from men’s fashion over time.  The day had been a long but ultimately fulfilling one, and we couldn’t wait to share our news with the Editorial team and group of writers and photographers. Our advice to anyone reading this with an interest in English, the Media, technology and the creative industries – get involved! Being involved in TERM magazine was the best decision we ever made and an enrichment activity that has proved to be fun and invaluable.
