RE and PHSE Statement

RE

Parents have the legal right to request that their child be withdrawn from all or part of Religious Education (RE). The Department for Education states that schools must provide RE for all pupils “except for those whose parents exercise the right of withdrawal.” Parents wishing to exercise this right should contact the Headteacher via our contact email. Where a student is withdrawn from RE, the school will make appropriate arrangements for supervision. It is important to note that withdrawal does not create an entitlement to alternative teaching, additional curriculum provision, or bespoke support. Students will therefore be supervised during the period of withdrawal in any appropriate space and may be asked to undertake independent study or other suitable supervised work.

PHSE

Parents do not have a right to withdraw their child from PSHE. However, under Department for Education guidance, parents may request that their child be withdrawn from some or all of the non-statutory sex education elements delivered as part of an RSE curriculum. Parents and carers who believe there may be exceptional reasons to withdraw their child should use our contact email and request a message to be sent to the Assistant Headteacher who leads the PHSE curriculum who will explain the curriculum content. Students cannot be withdrawn from statutory Relationships, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), or Health Education content that schools are legally required to teach. Our PHSE curriculum is founded on statutory elements and so any withdrawal would need come about in exceptional circumstances and not simply by request. It is important to note that withdrawal does not create an entitlement to alternative teaching, additional curriculum provision, or bespoke support. Students will therefore be supervised during the period of withdrawal in any appropriate space and may be asked to undertake independent study or other suitable supervised work.
