The English Department

The English Department at Tarporley is committed to providing students the chance to engage with the “Best of English”. This happens in both the classroom and the opportunities we provide that go beyond school.

We run yearly trips to the theatre that are related to the set texts they study across all Key Stages. We also run the Cheshire Books Awards club, which is an opportunity for students to engage with a range of books from different genres, talk about their viewpoint and even go to the awards ceremony itself. This also provides students with the opportunity to meet the authors themselves!

Throughout the academic year, we also run regular writing competitions – some of these are national competitions such as Twisted Tales and Empowered – with very exciting prizes. Students can demonstrate their creative abilities and engage with challenging writing topics that, in many cases, have gone on to be published by several national competitions.

At KS5, students have the opportunity to take part in TERM Magazine; a KS5 run magazine that has won yearly accolades at the prestigious SHINE Awards in London. This year we are also launching HALF TERM magazine which will be run by KS3 and KS4 students. Students will have the opportunity to make creative contributions with stories, articles and interviews. For those pupils that are interested in the creative medias, they will also have opportunity to submit their photography for the magazine and help in the designing, making and editing of it too.

In addition to school trips, we encourage all students to engage with opportunities outside the classroom in their own time. At Key Stage Three, students are given a ‘Read, Watch. Listen, Go’ list with suggested ways in which they can engage with the subject outside the classroom. We want students to see English as something that is relevant to their daily lives and their development as an individual.
