Physical Education

“Champions aren’t made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them—a desire, a dream, a vision.”

Muhammad Ali

What you can expect studying Physical Education at Tarporley High School and Sixth Form College

A high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in sport and other physically-demanding activities.  It will provide students with the opportunities to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness.

Physical education at Tarporley aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives

Key Stage 4 – GCSE Curriculum

At GCSE, we follow the Edexcel Physical Education (9-1) specification.  Students will receive a well-rounded and full introduction to the world of PE, sport and sport science by developing an understanding of how the mind and body works in relation to performance in physical activity. Students will study the 4 component parts of the GCSE specification.

Component 1:  Fitness & Body Systems

  • Applied anatomy and physiology
  • Movement analysis
  • Physical training

Component 2:  Health & Performance

  • Health, fitness and well-being
  • Sport psychology
  • Socio-cultural influences

Component 3:  Practical part of the course

Students are required to perform in three sports/activities chosen from a selection of team and individual options.

Component 4: Personal Exercise Programme

Students will choose an aspect of fitness that they would like to improve, complete a 6-8 week training programme and evaluate the progress that they have made.

Key Stage 4 – Core Curriculum

Those students that do not select the GCSE course will follow a core programme of study.  Students will choose a ‘core pathway’ to follow each term.  The ‘performance pathway’ has a competitive sports influence with students participating in games and individual activities from a variety of sports.  The ‘healthy, active lifestyles pathway’ has a health and fitness influence with students participating in activities with a fitness element and will also access our school fitness equipment during lessons.

Extra-Curricular Opportunities

  • Enrichment: this takes place on a Wednesday afternoon, students have the opportunity to consolidate their skills in traditional sporting activities or try something new such as boxercise or pilates.
  • After-school Clubs: students can join clubs in a variety of sporting activities that take place after school.
  • Inter-tutor: students have the opportunity to represent their tutor group in many sporting activities and competitions culminating in Sports activity afternoon.
  • School Teams: we operate teams that compete in local competitions in many sports including football, netball, handball, hockey, rugby, athletics, tennis, table tennis, and badminton.  Many of our successful teams go on to compete at county and regional competitions.
